Period: 9th–12th century ADCulture: viking eraMaterial: Copper alloy (bronze)Total length: 87 mmBell dimensions: Approximately 30 × 20 mm eachAn unusual and attractive early medieval bronze ornament consisting of three spherical jingle bells suspended from an elaborate arrangement of bronze wires. The three bells remain attached to their suspension loops and intertwined wire structure. Each hollow bell features a characteristic elongated sounding slit and contains a small loose metal pellet, which still produces an audible jingling sound when moved. The bells display subtle incised linear decoration and a beautiful dark green to brown patina, with traces of oxidation and age-related wear. These ornaments could have been used as decorative attachments, elements of horse harnesses or suspended accessories, possibly also carrying an amuletic or protective significance. The survival of all three functioning bells together with their associated wire suspension makes this an especially interesting ensemble.ConditionGood overall condition for its presumed age, with surface wear, oxidation and irregularities. All three bells retain their internal pellets and produce an audible sound. The wire suspension is preserved, showing bending and age-related wear.
