This rare 1946 published account of the Makin Atoll campaign deals with the unit level of combat and actions during this famous battle. In November 1943, U.S. forces were finally sufficient to break into the Japanese-held Gilbert Islands of the Central Pacific. The Marines drew Tarawa. The U.S. Army got Makin Island. An augmented 27th Division conducted the actual invasion over four days in late November. This U.S. War Department pamphlet, first published in 1946, is a more finished effort than some which were published while the Second World War was still in progress. The narrative of four days of combat is fairly detailed, especially with respect to the actual landings. While refraining from overt criticism, it captures a fair number of lessons learned. The text includes a nice selection of maps, battle diagrams, and period photographs. Recommended to students of the conflict as a better than average first take on history. This is one of the best after Action report of this famous campaign, a 1st edition (most on the market are facismiles reprint), which would be a great addition to your WW2 collection!
