A late Qing dynasty to Republic period Yixing-clay square teapot decorated with colorfully enameled Three Friends of Winter appliques, being: Prunus (sidewall), Bamboo (spout) and Pine (handle, knob).The Chinese celebrated the pine, bamboo and plum together, for they observed that these plants do not wither as the cold days deepen into the winter season unlike many other plants. Together they symbolize steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience.
