Stephanie van der Klooster – XL- Into the Air

In this painting, I wanted to create a sense of movement, particularly through the flowing lines of the hair. I like the idea of a figure becoming part of its surroundings, where the boundaries between the person and the background begin to disappear. I played with this by combining loose, expressive lines with softer areas of colour.I studied classical painting, which gave me a strong foundation in drawing, composition, and technique. Over the years, my work has gradually become more expressive. I have learned to let go of strict realism, allowing more room for movement, abstraction, and intuition.I wanted the figure to feel both present and slightly elusive, as though she is becoming part of the space around her. I worked quite loosely, leaving brushstrokes, flowing lines, and drips visible.
