Bound in contemporary dark brown full calf over bevelled boards, the covers with blind tooled border and elaborate blind tooled central panels, the spine divided into six panels, lettered in gilt in the second panel on a lighter brown leather label and the others tooled in gilt with small leaf design, red marbled endpapers, red stained edges. The spine slightly darkened, with light rubbing to the covers. A few annotations and old traces of damp staining to the endpapers, with some losses to the marbled paper on the rear endpapers, otherwise clean and fresh internally. Ex-libris inscription. Scarce beautiful copy with added flourishes.An anthology of early English and Scottish ballad poetry, edited by Richard John King, scholar, antiquary and poet. 1,000 copies were printed in London by Charles Whittingham for the distinguished publisher William Pickering. The volume offers a concise introduction to the early ballad tradition, with selections drawn from the collections and works of such important figures as Thomas Percy, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Chambers, alongside traditional and largely anonymous material.
