Ptah-Sokar-Osiris is a composite Egyptian deity from the Late Period, who combines the functions of the creator god Ptah (creation), the Memphite god of the dead Sokar (underworld) and the god of rebirth Osiris (resurrection). This deity symbolises the cycle of death and rebirth and served as a funerary offering to protect the deceased in the afterlife. Key aspects of Ptah-Sokar-Osiris: Function: The figure was placed in tombs, often from the Third Intermediate Period onwards, to assist the soul of the deceased in the transition to a new life. Appearance: Wooden gesso aplied and painted figures on a pedestal. Symbolism: The fusion emphasises the continuity of life. This encompasses Sokar’s role as the sun god of the night and Osiris’s archetype of resurrection. Connection to Memphis: The three gods were closely associated with the necropolis of Memphis.
