Offered for auction is rare medal for the Dutch Burgerwacht of Rotterdam; this was a private award established in 1940 (See history below). The cross was awarded to the members of the Rotterdam Civil Guard who were under arms from 28 August 1939 to 15 May 1940. The cross was awarded to the civil guards by the commander, Lieutenant Colonel A.P.H. Boellaard. At the beginning of the occupation, the German occupier did not object to such honours. The Chapter of the Military William Order was also preparing the award of brave Dutch soldiers undisturbed at that time.
