Large Antique Milk Jug / Canne à Lait – Brass and Copper – 19th CenturyLarge and highly decorative antique milk jug, made from a combination of brass and red copper.The jug has a characteristic bulbous body, tall cylindrical neck, large curved side handle and a removable lid with a substantial carrying handle.The construction is clearly traditional and handcrafted. The object has been assembled from several individually formed metal sections, with old seams and soldered joints still visible. Small irregularities in the surface and construction are consistent with its age and traditional method of manufacture.Particularly attractive is the contrast between the warm golden brass body and the red copper elements, including the lower rim. Over many years, the surface has developed a beautiful natural patina.The shape and construction show strong similarities to 19th-century Western European milk vessels, including the traditional French type commonly referred to as a “canne à lait”.A Dutch or French origin is possible. However, no maker's marks, hallmarks or other stamps have been found that would allow the exact country of origin to be established with certainty.
