Kura and Abumi – Hout, Lak, Staal – Japan – Midden Edo periode

This nice matching Kura (saddle) and Abumi (stirrups) were made during the mid Edo Period.Samurai warriors increasingly used horses and rode the gunjingura, or war saddle. The main weapon of early samurai warfare was the yumi (bow), and the kura provided a rugged, stable, comfortable platform for shooting arrows.The Kura has four main components: the maewa (the arched front plate), the hizuwa (the arched rear plate), and the Igi (two contoured sidebands). They are holding the arched front plate and arched rear plate together.
