The delicate modelling of the face, subtle skin tones and concentrated expression give the portrait a remarkably intimate and sensitive character.Julius Schmid was born in Vienna in 1854 and studied for seven years at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 1878 he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome, allowing him to continue his studies in Italy. He was also briefly associated with the circle of Hans Makart, one of the leading painters of late 19th-century Vienna. Schmid became known for portraits, figure paintings and historical compositions.
