Vignette head piece on 2 pages.the Württemberg anatomist Josias Weitbrecht (1702–1747) studied natural science at the University of Tübingen and obtained the degree of Master of Philosophy. In 1721, through Johann Georg Duvernoy, he came to St. Petersburg, where he studied medicine and physiology. He became a member of the Imperial Russian Academy of Sciences. From 1727 onward he devoted himself exclusively to anatomy.In July 1729 he worked on a catalogue of the Ruysch Museum (part of the so-called Kunstkammer) and wrote an Compendium anatomicum as its introduction; neither the catalogue nor the compendium was printed. In 1736 he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the medical faculty of Königsberg on the basis of a dissertation entitled De febrili constitutione petechizante. He died on 28 February 1747, at only 45 years of age.Weitbrecht was one of the most important anatomists of his time, more significant than his closest colleagues Duvernoy, Wilde, and others.
