Old uniface bronze cast (with suspension loop) of Ludovico III Gonzaga (1414-1478);diameter 94,2 mm (...); weight ca 200 gr.; made by Italian medalist Pisanello (AntonioPisano) about 1447 or 1448 when Ludovico was "Capitano Generale" of the Florentinetroops (probably later cast); very fine+;the obverse of this medal shows in a field setting Ludovico III Gonzaga, 2nd Marquessof Mantua riding on horseback (with closed visor and globular crest); in the field abovehim a radiant sun at left, moon and a sun-flower on stock at right;its a RARE, important and attractive piece for numismatic collectors;on left side "Opus Pisani Pictoris"; Antonio Pisano or Pisanello (born in Pisa or Verona ca 1395; died 1455) .He was a famous painter, draughtsman and medalist. His richly decorative frescoes,courtly and elegant painted portraits and highly original portrait medals made him oneof the most popular artists of the day.He travelled extensively and worked for several Italian courts, at Mantua, Ferrara, Pavia,Milan and Naples.
