It is neither a print, nor a reproduction, nor a proof: it is the map itself, in a single copy.MANUFACTURE IN LAYERSBefore digital cartography, a press map was built up by layering several separate sheets, assembled at the time of photogravure. This lot preserves these layers:- The geographical background with an airbrush, kept and photographed alone: relief modeled in gradients of green and yellow, coastline cut by hand, lakes and rivers redrawn with a brush on a blue field. No text, no vignette: the map’s original state, before any assembly.- The topography film, in transfer lettering, up to province names composed letter by letter in an arc across the territory (ULSTER, CONNAUGHT, LEINSTER, MUNSTER).- The vignette film, bearing the motifs painted by hand, then cut out and pasted one by one.- A transparent overlay film, still in place and hinged on the board, as well as the alignment marks drawn in pencil on the margin that kept the whole in register.CONTENT OF... lees verder bij Catawiki
