The volume opens with Tonwissenschaft und Tonsezkunst (1776), Vogler's revolutionary theoretical introduction mapping out his famous circle of fifths and chord modulation theories. This is immediately followed by Kuhrpfälzische Tonschule (1778), his practical, highly sought-after pedagogical manual designed specifically for his groundbreaking "öffentliche Tonschule" (public music school) in Mannheim—the direct historical precursor to modern state music conservatories. Both works showcase Vogler’s uniquely conversational, native German instruction style and his pioneering methodology of using Roman numerals to designate harmonic scale degrees. Vol I comes with an engraved fold-out plate of the “Musicalischer Zirkel” as well as a fold-out of a chords table.
