An Intimate Bronze Sculpture by Frank Letterie: Embarquement pour CythèreThis intimate and tender bronze sculpture by the renowned Dutch sculptor Frank Letterie (b. 1931) is a beautiful, tangible tribute to love and connection. The work features a man and a woman close together in a harmonious embrace. Its French title, Embarquement pour Cythère—a classic motif in art history symbolizing the voyage to Aphrodite’s mythical island of love—infuses the piece with deep poetic resonance. This exquisitely numbered edition (5/19) radiates an aura of timeless romance and comfort.Sculptural Power and TextureThe sculpture stands out through the subtle interaction and gentle dynamics between the two figures. The man tenderly places his arm around the woman's waist as she tilts her head slightly toward him, creating an organic interplay of lines. Letterie opts for an expressive, fluid modeling style where exact anatomy yields to the emotion of the pose. The surface treatment is rich and worked; the visible traces of the artist's hands lend the bronze skin a striking tactile vitality. A deep, dark patina accentuates the contours of the figures, casting a warm, captivating play of light and shadow.Historical Context and AtmosphereFrank Letterie belongs to a distinguished generation of post-war Dutch sculptors.
