A Lot of Two Chinese Carved Soapstone Scholar’s ObjectsChina, early to mid-20th centuryA finely executed lot of two Chinese soapstone carvings, showcasing the versatility of this soft sedimentary material, prized for its subtle colour variations and suitability for intricate carving.The first piece is a censer, richly carved with multiple guardian lions (Foo Dogs). At its centre is an openwork pierced sphere allowing incense smoke to escape, surmounted by a larger lion forming the cover, while additional lions flank the sides and base. In Chinese symbolism, these mythical creatures serve as protectors, warding off negative influences. The layered brownish-purple base enhances the sculptural presence.The second object is a brush washer or holder, designed in a naturalistic floral form. It incorporates three small vessels nestled among finely carved branches and blossoms—likely peony or chrysanthemum, traditional symbols of wealth and longevity. The lighter, pinkish tone of the stone contributes to its refined and elegant appearance.Together, these objects form a harmonious combination of functional scholar’s implements and decorative carvings, demonstrating skilled workmanship in transforming a single block of stone into complex, multi-dimensional compositions.Condition:Both have small damage, wear and scratches.
