Antique 19th Century Wooden Flask – Balkan / Greek / Ottoman / Russian Origin Authentic and richly decorated antique powder flask, also known as a powder horn, traditionally used by hunters or soldiers to store and transport gunpowder. This rare piece originates from the Balkan region, reflecting strong Greek, Ottoman, Russian and Byzantine influences. The body of the flask is made of wood, reinforced with brass bands and finely detailed brass ornaments. All bands and applied decorations are non-magnetic, confirming the use of brass. The front and back are identical in design, showing a harmonious and symmetrical composition. At the center is a large round medallion depicting Saint George slaying the dragon, an ancient Christian symbol representing the victory of good over evil. Above and below the central medallion are decorations of a double-headed eagle and on the left and right a guardian angel, both symbolizing power and protection. On the sides of the flask, a snake motif is visible, traditionally serving as a talisman for luck and protection. These decorations are characteristic of Byzantine and Christian heritage symbolism, widely used in this region during the 19th century. The flask remains untreated and in original condition.
