The softly modelled features, elegant proportions and carefully worked drapery are characteristic of Spanish religious sculpture. The figure may represent the Virgin Mary. As the original arms and attributes are no longer present, a definitive identification is unfortunately no longer possible.The sculpture retains visible traces of historic polychromy. Parts of the surface appear to have been repainted or refreshed during the 18th century, which is entirely consistent with the long devotional use of this type of religious sculpture.The work is carved from a light-coloured wood, possibly limewood.Despite the losses to the arms and the natural signs of age, the sculpture has retained a particularly strong sculptural presence.
