Art Deco vase in blue satin glass, model "Eventail" — Espaivet (S.P.V., Paris), circa 1925–1930DescriptionThe most celebrated glassmaker of the early twentieth century is arguably René Lalique. His output was vast, but he was certainly not the only maker working in the same technique and idiom. This vase is a fine example of that broader production: ovoid, with a short flaring neck, blown into the mould under compressed air — the method that gives the relief its crispness and the glass its satin skin.The decoration is a continuous repetition of fans (model Eventail), overlapping across the body like roof tiles. The motif runs uninterrupted around the vase and tightens towards the shoulder, making the form read as fuller still. The clear blue colour, deeper in the engraved lines and lifting on the curves, is what makes the piece irresistible: under raking light the surface shifts from powder blue to almost white.The name Espaivet is the phonetic rendering of the initials S.P.V., for the Société Parisienne de Verrerie, established in Paris at the end of the nineteenth century.
