De Ruyter.Eduard Douwes Dekker (1860-1887) is considered to be one of the Netherlands' greatest authors. An assistant governor resident of Lebak on Java, wrote this novel against the colonial administration's abuses in the Dutch East-Indies (today's Indonesia). What shocked most people was not the novel's social protest but it's surprising form and style. "The novel, Max Havelaar, made Douwes Dekker into the writer Multatuli. The Book became his touchstone and ethical standard. His attitude to all social problems seems either derived from Max Havelaar or from one of its basic themes. It is pivotal to his work, also because his stay in the Dutch East-Indies was decisive in the development of his authorship", (R.
