Initially, he lived and worked in Alkmaar and Bergen, then spent a longer time in England (1910) and the United States (1911) and lived in Amsterdam and Almelo (1923). In 1924, he settled permanently in Oud-Loosdrecht, on the Horndijk. His most successful period was approximately between 1910 and 1925. In various styles, he painted figures, flowers, and especially decorative landscapes and water lilies, for which he drew inspiration from the water-rich landscape of North Holland.
