Her jewellery and refined attire indicate wealth and status, typical of the prosperous merchant class in the Southern Netherlands during the late 16th century.The refined costume of the sitter is fully in line with the Spanish court fashion of the late 16th century, particularly associated with the period of Isabella Clara Eugenia.
