Chinese Export School – Fine Pair of Pith Paper WatercoloursChina, Mid-19th CenturyAn exceptional pair of original Chinese export watercolours on authentic pith paper, dating to the mid-19th century. The paintings depict an elegant Qing court lady and a military official dressed in richly embroidered ceremonial attire, executed with remarkable precision and vibrant original colours. The quality of these works is particularly noteworthy. The refined facial modelling, confident brushwork, intricate rendering of the embroidered silk garments and harmonious colour palette place them among the finer examples of Canton export painting produced during the Qing Dynasty. The artistic execution closely resembles the work of the celebrated Sunqua (Sun Qua) workshop, one of the most renowned Chinese export studios of the 19th century. While no definitive attribution is made, these paintings are clearly executed in the finest tradition and style associated with Sunqua and comparable high-quality Canton ateliers.Paintings on pith paper were created specifically for the Western export market and remain among the most desirable forms of Chinese export art. Fine examples of this quality have become increasingly scarce. Both works are professionally framed behind glass with elegant cream passe-partouts and black wooden frames, ready for display.Origin: China, Canton Export SchoolPeriod: Mid-19th century (circa 1850–1870)Medium: Watercolour... lees verder bij Catawiki
