Bronze Burmese sitting Buddha, late 18th century, Shane States.Exceptionel refined work and craftsmanship. with some vague inscriptions on the back.Beautiful quality and well executed bronze Buddha, minimalistic depicted and devoid of any decoration.Although highly stylized, the sculpture displays al the iconographic characteristics of a Buddha and severalof the important marks of a Buddha are crearly visible, like enlarged bodyparts, fingers and toes of equal lenght, stretched ear lobes, and child-like facial features. The markings of the folds of the robe are just thin engraved lines and is worn close to the body, mysteriouly transparent, suggesting the spiritaul power emanating from the Buddha. This minimalist depiction is to emphasize the ascetic way of life of Buddha.In Burma Buddha sculptures are subject to strict conservative econographical regulations according to accepted Theravada Buddhist practise, artistic development was never a part but an authentic canon of the Buddha icons was the prime artistic consern.Shan StatesMost Shane States were just little principalities organised around the chief town in the region and have a long history.
