Large Chinese Blue and White “Shonzui” Bowl for the Japanese Market, Mid–Late 17th CenturyChina, late Ming to early Qing dynasty, ca. 1640–1680A large porcelain bowl finely painted in underglaze blue with bands of intersecting “S”-shaped curves, forming a dynamic all-over pattern characteristic of Shonzui ware — a distinctive category of blue and white porcelain made in China specifically for the Japanese market during the mid- to late 17th century. The interior and exterior are decorated with rhythmic, calligraphic brushwork, while the base bears an apocryphal Jiajing four-character mark.Shonzui wares are among the most sophisticated export porcelains of the period, admired in Japan for their refined painting, dense blue tone, and association with the tea ceremony.The dish is accompanied by its wooden tomobako collector’s box and silk damast wrapping cloth.
