✦ GEEN RESERVE, BEGROET EXCELLENTA finely executed 19th-century copy after Andrea del Sarto’s celebrated Portrait of a Young Man (c. 1517–18), one of the defining portraits of the Florentine High Renaissance. The composition captures the sitter turning his head over his shoulder, creating the impression of a private moment suddenly interrupted. Del Sarto’s original, now in the National Gallery, London, is thought to depict the Florentine stationer Lorenzo di Matteo Peri and is admired for its restrained palette, psychological intensity, and remarkable naturalism. These qualities are faithfully echoed in the present work, from the penetrating gaze and softly modelled features to the rich chiaroscuro and sober elegance of the costume. The original painting was particularly influential for later Renaissance portraiture, anticipating the directness and introspective character found in the works of Moroni and other 16th-century masters. An attractive Grand Tour–era interpretation of one of Andrea del Sarto’s most admired portraits, offering collectors a fine example of 19th-century appreciation for the Italian Renaissance.
