DescriptionA fine group of three Chinese export watercolors on pith paper, produced in Canton (Guangzhou) during the 19th century for the Western market. These delicate paintings were created specifically for European and American collectors and travelers, who prized them for their vibrant colors and detailed depictions of Chinese life, costumes, flora, fauna, and daily scenes.Pith paper (also known as rice paper, though technically different) was made from the inner pith of the Tetrapanax plant. Its soft, almost velvety surface allowed for exceptionally bright and refined watercolor painting, but it is also highly fragile by nature. Two paintings are presented in frames; one remains unframed. The colors remain attractive and lively, typical of Canton export works from this period.Age19th century, Canton (Guangzhou), ChinaMeasurementsFramed examples: approx. 35.5 cm wide × 28.5 cm high (including frame)ConditionMinor damages are present, consistent with the fragile nature of pith paper. These small imperfections are typical for works of this type and age. Please see the photographs for details. All objects are packed with the greatest care and shipped fully insured.
