1930 – Antique golf club – wood – Driver – Excellent shape

Beautiful looking wooden driverPersimmon wooden clubhead in very good condition.Persimmon wood is heavy, hard, and strong for a temperate species. It has excellent shock and wear resistance.Lead weight in the back and an inset sole underneath.The special grip is made by the Avon Rubber Company and is marked Avon Golf Pride. The Avon Rubber Company made lots of rubber products from car tires to swimming floats to golf club grips.The introduction of steel shafts was quite difficult as all clubs to that date were hickory wood. This innovation got a shocking setback when in 1923, Yje United States Golf Association USGA barred the shafts from official play on the grounds of it being a mechanical aid! The steel shaft clubs were not to be used in USGA sanctioned championships until it could be proved to be not a mechanical aid and its use will not provide any undue advantage.The clubhead is marked J. Ookenden, North Middlesex Golf club. J. Ookenden was a regular competitor in important golf matches.
