A highly detailed miniature version of the very Finnish design icon, the Karuselli Chair, by Yrjö Kukkapuro, made by the Vitra Design Museum.

As new in original box, with Vitra flyer/booklet, never used or displayed.

When fiberglass entered Finland in the 1950s, it was very expensive to use. It was already invented before, and famously used in the U.S. by Charles and Ray Eames from the 1940s and onwards.

Finnish architect Yrjö Kukkapuro realized the first model of his Karuselli chair in 1958–1959 and in early 1960s when glassfibre became cheaper Kukkapuro continued the development of Karuselli which finally was produced by the Finnish furniture company Haimi Oy in 1964.

It’s named Karuselli (Carousel) simply because it swivels. It was designed to provide a maximum relaxing sitting position, that embraces and acknowledges all parts of human anatomy. It’s rubber dampers, shockmounts, give the chair a little bit of flex when used. Coated with a thick layer of semigloss white paint, and upholstered in black leather, it was quickly embraced by many design enthousiasts.

The chair represents a novel combination of ergonomics, new materials and production methods, as well as artistic design: and the combination of these qualities made the Karuselli a revolutionary chair of its time and beyond.
