I have here for sale a RARE book entitled Adventures in the Great Forest of Equatorial Africa and the Country of the Dwarfs by Du Chaillu, Paul B. Published by Harper & Brothers, New York, 1890. It’s a second edition abridged, with a Map and numerous full page, and in-textillustrations, (originally published in 1871)
A fascinating edition abridged of this important work by the anthropologist and traveller Paul Belloni du Chaillu. He became famous in the 1860s as the first modern outsider to confirm the existence of gorillas – introducing a scientific appraisal of the species into Western culture through this very book, the frontispiece of which contains the first ever depiction of the Gorilla by a Westerner.
Bound in brown linen boards. Gilt illustration of a gorilla to the front board. Gilt title lettering to the spine. Spine shows wear with some loss at ends and fraying at top edge. Internally very good with a tight binding although pages are slightly tanned. Full page sketch Map to illustrate P.B. Chaillu’s routes, and 93 illustrations. Overall condition near Very Good.
