A Meiji period lacquered Kannon Bosatsu sitting on a lotus throne above crashing waves. The depicted Kamakura-style Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy (Avalokiteshvara), is an extremely popular deity in Japan and is depicted with the right hand in a abhaya mudra 'gesture of fearlessness'. The abhaya mudra is the gesture of reassurance and safety, which dispels fear and accords divine protection and bliss. The left hand holds a gilded closed lotus bud.
